My Car & Bankruptcy

Hi All

I've had some great advice from people here over the last week and I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice about my car. My car isn't worth much, in fact I'm not sure I'd be able to find a buyer because the car will need a lot of work done to it within the next year or so and I don't think I could bring myself to sell it without telling the buyer.....(although someone did tell me I should do this but I'd hate it if it happened to me).

Does anyone have any advice about what an OR would decide to do about my car.....or what has happened in these kinds of situations?

I'd like to keep my car because I use it to get to my Doctors twice a month (Dr is about 30mile drive away and not on a bus route). Also, my car isn't costing me much to run because of an agreement I have with my parents.....that's how I've managed to keep it this long.

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts on this I'd be grateful.....thanks RRD :)

not sure what you've been told already but with cars you need to prove that you NEED it (not that it's a convenience) .. is it needed for work? can you get a note from your doctor etc...?

  • Thanks for your replies :)

As soon as I'd posted this thread I saw that somebody else had already posted a very similar thread and the answers there gave me more of an idea of what might happen too.

When I had my first meeting at the CAB they mentioned a Debt relief order might be the way to go (Costus told me first! :) ) I need to call creditors first to find out what final amounts owing are.....I might just scrape under £15,000 with some luck. Everything I've read so far about DRO does not mention having to get rid of your car so who knows.....I'll find out more next week when I go back to the CAB for my next appt. It's just the waiting.....seems to be taking forever!

Waspeze - I think my doctor would write a letter for me if it came to it....thank you for the suggestion :)

Summer - I am sorry to hear about your car :(

Thanks for that. Its been a difficult winter, without one, but we have managed for the past 7 months, obviously saved us a fortune, so just showed us that we can do without. We would like to get one in the future, but just going to concentrate on budgeting, which we are both doing very well, and saving up little bits and pieces when we can. One day!!
