Do not even think about it for three reasons:
1) you would have a fifteen month account period with no accounts period ending in the tax year 2007/08. This involves complicated tax calculations with a thorough knowledge of basis periods.
2) The HMRC will attack any attempt to change your year end to earlier in the tax year unless for sound commercial reasons - you have already stated that your main reason is to save tax only.
3) you have a Capital Gains issue with the sale of the shop premises - when were contacts signed for the sale?0
