Claiming for tax for work shoes.

Righto, had a bit of a look already but couldn't find a definitive answer.

I start a new job next week and whilst I will be prepared with all clothing/safety equipment etc, I have been told that I must obtain my own footwear.

I have heard that I can possibly claim tax on the cost of the boots, since they are required for work. Is this the case?

If I need to provide more information, please let me know. Many Thanks :)

  • it depends what type of work you do. you can have a flat rate expense included in your code 'FRE' for short which increases you personal allowance, meaning you can earn more before being taxed. FRE's are generally a standard figure determined by the indusrty you work in. best thing to do is call your tax office and ask for flat rate expenses to be included in your code. if the cost of your shoes is more than the FRE, write in and ask for tax relief equal to the amount you payed, make sure you say its essential to your job that you buy them. hope this helps.
