Why do the Jobcentre want personal information about a housemate?

MY son's hours at Matalan have been cut to only eight a week and he was advised by the CAB to sign on for JSA (income-based, I think).

He has had the telephone interview today and told them his circumstances.

Fine, that is OK, but why do they want personal information about his housemate? Like where he works and what he earns? My son had already told them he received no money from anything or anybody other than his job.

He has not given the information (as he doesn't know some of it) - they haven't pressed him for it.

Anyone know why they want this?

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

They could take the other's circumstances into account if they were living as a couple (sharing the same bed that is).

They are just two male friends sharing a house, not a couple.

Ts_aly, I must admit, last time my son had to sign on for JSA I helped him with the form and it asked these questions, we just put the housemate's name and left the rest blank; they never asked for the information and my son got his JSA.

I just wondered why they asked it. The living as a couple bit I can understand, but they never asked him that.

  • he will probably get sent the form LTF1, asking about his friend, if they suspect possible living together they will arrange a visit, as you say they are just house mates he has nothing to worry about, just standard procedure, but usually the contact centre just ask; name, DOB and etc, not how much they earn, this would only be done at a later stage if a visiting officer confirmed living together.
  • It may have been about the rent or Council Tax benefit, not just the JSA because he was applying for these at the same time.

As I say, last time he applied he was asked this and there were three of them sharing then, so I wouldn't think that it was to do with being partners.

My son doesn't even know his housemate's d.o.b or how much he earns!

Does everyone who house-shares get asked this if they apply for a State Benefit?
