HELP for a friend whose employer has taken back her sick pay

Would any of you lovely money saving experts know the answer to this problem? My friend has been off work for 13 weeks signed off with depression. She has been unable to get her wage slips because they were kept at her work place. They thought because her wages had been going into her bank account everything was sorted and ok. The amounts were variable but she was off work so didnt think anything of it. She returned to work (Jan 1st) and this week (end of Jan) she picked up the 4 months wage slips which showed before her sickness she got basic pay as expected, then for two months payments of payable SSP but deductions of OSP deductions. This months payslip shows her basic pay a deduction equal to all of her paid SSP and a credit for all of the removed OSP deductions. This has left her with a net pay this month of £58.43. WHAT IS GOING ON? IS THIS CORRECT AND CAN HER EMPLOYER DO THIS WITHOUT ANY CONTACT OR PRE-WARNING?

Apologies I've found it difficult to understand what's happened on your friends payslips but when I processed payroll:
The payroll program automatically "pays" people their standard pay.
I would have to manually credit all the basic pay and trigger off SSP payments for them.
Meaning that the person on sick would generally only received the SSP amounts after tax and NI had been taken into consideration.
Sometimes I would not be notified that people had been on sick until the week after the pay had been paid so corrections had to be done the following month - if this was the case the HR manager would contact the person on sick and explain the situation as soon as we became aware of it - and if it posed any difficulty sometimes the correction was done over 2 months to make it easier.
It will depend though on her companies policy on sickness payments as to what has happened - how much she's entitled to and how long for.
She can always query it with the person who runs her payroll - a mistake may have been made.0 -

Thanks guys:T. my friend has contacted her payrol dept who say they will investigate on monday. still not sure if they were right to make a deduction from payrol without prior notification. (even if it is money owed).0
