Buying a tv question...

I'm sorry if I have put this in the wrong place :o

We are wanting to buy a flat screen tv with a built in dvd player and freeview and a record facility (if this is possible ) but as it is a potentially huge expense I thought I'd ask the super clever MSEers for advice first.

Can anyone recommend a really good bargain? Should I buy it through a cashback site? (I've never used one before)

Thank you

Personally I'm no fan of having anything built in - it's just more things to go wrong and most things that do more than one thing don't do any of the things as well as a bit of kit that just does the one thing. If you follow.

What I'd recommend obviously depends on a) your requirements and b) your budget - what things do you want to do with the system? Do you want a DVD recorder? Is it important to you to have a brilliant picture? brilliant sound?
How much stuff do you want to record? do you have sky+ or similar already? How big a TV do you want?

As a general guide, though, I'm a huge fan of the Humax as a HDD recorder - really think it's the best bit of kit I've bought in a long time, so I'd recommend getting one of those, a cheapy DVD player (or recorder) for £50 (if that) and keep an eye on the grabbit board etc for a good deal to come up on a 32" telly, maybe around £300-400. That would put the total cost at something like £650-750...Obviously if that's too much, you'd have to look at other things...and that doesn't include any kind of "home cinema" style sound, which is probably a separate thread in its own right...

That is what my dad has always said too! The reason I'd like everything built in is because we have a toddler who constantly presses the buttons on everything (tv, dvd player and freeview recorder) so they are all getting a bit worn out  So I thought a flat screen tv (32") with everything built in that could be mounted on the mantlepiece would solve the problem :D

Our budget would probably stretch to £500. I'm not too bothered about having the home cinema experience with speakers all round the room etc.

Nothing wrong with built in equipment in my opinion, I have had my TV combi for nearly 5 years with no problems, My brother has one for nearly 3 years and I have friends who have them. They take up less space and are ideal for small rooms or whatever. You get warranty with it anyway and can pay extra for additional warranty if need be so you are covered.

A lot of things now a days are not built how they used to be but still last a while most of the time.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T

You're very lucky to have found stuff to do what you wanted all in one unit.

When I last upgraded my TV, I was unable to even get a standalone DVD-RW to do everything I wanted (well, for less than silly money, anyway), so ended up having to get two of the things.

Like I said before, I guess it's all down to your requirements :)

Check this deal out, Samsung 40" lcd tv with built in freeview. You just need to find recorder and dvd player. Hardrive recorders are better than dvd recorders. If you want cashback, use topcashback, but you will only earn £2.50.

A friend of mine has a humax 26inch tv with freeview and hard drive built in. It's fab. DVD is separate on that though. It was also much less than £500 (he is a poor student and couldn't afford anything that expensive!!)
