And they are all shop keeping posts! Too much shopping helped get us into this mess. Where are the manufacturing and wealth creating jobs?

Well with Woolworths and other retailers closing manufacturing jobs would not be much use to them would they!

Or would you prefer them to be destroyed on the dole.

haha, i see your point, but on the other hand, subway, H&M and Asda aren't exactly top of the range in terms of cost. Surely the vast majority of the spending that got us into this mess was mostly "keeping up with the Jones'" - cars, house extensions, holidays, upgrading things etc. Are you really suggesting going shopping at Asda is excessive consumerism?!

i'm with Really - it's good news. if the £ keeps fallign we might get a manufacturing industry back anyway...

Don't get me wrong. I am all for the jobs. I am just dissapointed that they are all shop keeping jobs. Manufacturing employment went below 3 million last year and is still heading south at a frightening speed. It is this imbalance that has made us the fastest declining economy in the developed world.

30 years ago the uber pessimists were convinced Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong would take all our business away and leave us a broken nation. It didn't happen.

All uber pessimists at ALL times will repeat these mantras - everything is always about to go down the swanny!

The realist takes account of all inputs. Sure we're losing jobs right now, and defo we lost sight of the importance of R & D and science but we will pick ourselves up and improve our lot.

They also forget the Brits are pretty good when it comes to the business side of sport, as exemplified by the global popularity of UK footbal, F1, Wimbledon.
Then there all those TV progs we sell around the world - whens the last time you watched a German wildlife documentary of kids prog?

Surrey is a leader in gaming software and yes I know the Canadians are attmpting to lure designers. We make the worlds best mixing desks for studios).
How about music - Elton, G Michael, P Collins? Dont see too many Japanese or Indian pop culture leaders.
Dance music is big business and we by far lead the world here.
    Weaponry.
    Aerospace.
    Ejector seats!
    Hospital design and build.
Education - many Brits employed around the world to establish schools in places such as China.

The list is endless. Ok so we might not make cheap clothes and DVDs, but we do still own plants in China that do.

The problem is that more jobs at the supermarket means less jobs at other retailers. Supermarket jobs are more efficient in terms of retail sales so if you want more people in work you should be seeking that the supermarkets do badly and the specialist stores do well, unlike how the situation is going.

H&M is good news, but Subway isn't as its not got any potential to be creating any new business, but will instead be picking off busines off its rivals - Greggs, coffee shops, local independent sandwich stores and fast food outlets.
