pain with wisdom tooth removal so they stopped

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can advise. I have never had any fillings but do go regularly to the denstist.

While at Uni in Oxford my wisdom teeth were coming through but there was limited space so my dentist referred me to the John Radcliffe where they removed the upper and lower wisdom tooth (on one side). This was done under local - I was awake and although it was a strange pushing sensation it did not hurt at all. Recovery was quick I was taking painkillers for a day or two but life continued as normal.

Now on the other side my lower wisdom tooth is decayed and the dentist discussed root canal but given the other side wisdom teeth were gone I said I would go for extraction. So she said she would do it today she gave me two injections, waited a while then used her tool to push but it really hurt - sharp throbbing pain. She waited a while longer and tried again but again it really ached - she snapped some tooth off and the pain was awful. She gave a third injection and tried again but again I had the most horrid sharp pain so she stopped and said I must have an infection and prescribed anti biotics and asked me to make another appointment to remove the tooth. I am now 27 why would the local not work?

Now I am home and it hurts lots a constant dull ache combined with periods of sharp pain. It hurts more than a recent operation on my leg fitting a metal plate and screws. I always thought I had a high pain threshold but today was horrid. Would an infection stop the local working???

Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated can not think of anything else right now.

thanks H xx

Yes - infection can make anaesthetic less effective.

It will be sore now it's been stirred up a bit, but that should soon settle on the ABs. Do Not be tempted to hold anything warm against it - that will make it 10 times worse!!

It should be fine when she tries it again.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks toothsmith for your reply I think I was getting paranoid that I was just being weak, its feeling a bit better now... Hopefully when I return with the infection gone it will be possible for it to come out with L A.

Your advise on this forum is really good. Wish my dentist gave such good explanations, she is very nice but doesn't say much and often speaks spanish rather than English.
    Thanks
