can anyone help here?? my son is going back to work after several years of suffering with depression. he has now decided that he needs a structure to his day/life. he wasnt eligable for incapacity benefit and has been getting income support instead of.
now, i seem to remember reading/hearing something about getting a financial payout/help if you get yourself back to work and out of the 'on the sick' thing.
i have looked and looked but cant find anything. maybe i am getting my wires crossed and am completely wrong!!
can anyone advise please. thanks.xx

Hiya,
I'm not sure what you're thinking of but I'd imagine that if a grant for getting back to work after being sick does exist then it would only apply to those who were on Incapacity Benefit and therefore 'officially' too ill to work.
Can he sign on for Jobseekers Allowance instead? If he's actively looking for work then he should be entitled, surely?
I wish him all the best. Over the last 2 years I've only worked 8 months because of depression so I know how hard it is. I left two jobs because it was too much and didn't sign on the dole because I knew they'd make me look for work and I just couldn't face it.
I had a temp job over xmas and just about managed to keep going for the 2 month contract. Maybe your son should try phoning the job centre to ask about eligibility for Jobseekers allowance and any advice about getting back to work after a long abscence. I'm sure they'll be some help out there for him. They might be able to offer some courses or training, for example.
Hope it all works out for you x0 -
He was officially to ill to work, he got income support because he didnt have enough stamps to pay him incapacity benefit. however, he is very lucky in this respect, a friend of a friend has offered him a job!!!!! and for the first time for a very long time, he is showing an interest and i think really wants to do it. he can only do his best. its been three years since he first became unwell. future is looking better!!!xx0
