Confused? Remortgage or Unsecured Loan

I am a complete newbie with all this so here goes - I am wanting to obtain £10,000 for home improvements. My husband and I are both retired and each receiving a works pension. We have just recently paid off most of our mortgage with our first endowment which leaves us with £12,000 to pay and which our second endowment will pay off in 3 years.
We don't know whether to lump the 2 sums together and go for a new mortgage (if that was even possible) take out a further advance on our mortgage or take out an unsecured loan.
Would appreciate any advice?
