I was told recently that if you have paid 30 years National Insurance then you can be exempt from paying any further NI and still get a pension...is this right?....sorry if there is a thread about this...if someone could direct me to it I would be grateful

If you are a working and earning money you pay NI until you are 60 (female) or 65 male irrespective of whether or not you have contribute for 30 years0

take a look at this article...it seems to be saying it comes in next year
"What's at issue here is that, in future, both men and women will need only 30 years of contributions to get the full state pension - instead of the present requirement of 44 years for men and 39 for women.
The proposed changes, which have yet to reach the statute book but are expected to go ahead, will actually take effect from 2010."

Yes from next year anyone retiring will need only 30 years NI contributions to qualify for a full retirement pension; but it does not mean that when you have paid 30 years you can stop paying. The article that you quote is about anyone who has missed some years for one reason or another and is wondering whether it is worth making voluntary contributions to fill in the gap. In their case as they will now only need 30 years it will probably not be worth doing this.
It remains though that if you earn over the threshold figure then NI is payable.0
