If most of your journeys in your car are spent on your own... buy a scooter!!
It cost me £200 for a years insurance (I'm 19 and insurance on my car was over £1,500!)
Tax is £15 instead of £180ish for the car
MOT is £15 instead of £40
Best of all, it does 100mpg! In my old car I was lucky to see 22mpg, so a HUGE saving there
:D
Also you can nip through the traffic in the morning which means an extra 20 minutes in bed, which of course is priceless

30 miles on a rural A road in winter at 4am doesn't make it that much of an attractive proposition for me0

You forgot to mention the rain...
Seriously, when I was younger I rode a bike but in my 40's I find a car has a comfort factor I can't ignore.

beeniemac - I admire your thinking though. Had to smile as I've seriously considered it, and I'm closer to XBigman's age! But please enlighten me - can it go faster than 30mph? I seem to get stuck behind one or two around here and didn't know if the riders were just being sissy?£16,500 in debt.
New debt free date: 2015 (was 2046!!).
Thanks MSE for helping me budget and therefore increase payments from £30 per month to £1500 -
My boyf had a 50CC in his younger years that went a max of 33mph, that was down a hill and got a speeding ticket for it!
Ive thought of getting one myself now that spring is on its way as I really feel it would be easier for me to get to work on etc and would be cheaper over a year than the cost of a monthly bus pass (£65 per month  ).
But then im scared of the cold and would also need to save a bit of cash up as id still need to use my car for shopping and longer journeys so couldnt sell it. And it wouldnt be worth much to sell either - its a bit battered, and would be easier to keep it!)

fab idea but with 2 kiddies and a tandem buggy i don't think so.
also if your last car only did 22 mpg u must of had an escort rs turbo , pulsar , cossy etc something silly . our rs did an amazing 20 mpg or something stupid like that.0
