Help with SA - 0 Income for Self Employment

Hi all

I am trying to complete my S.A online, but have run into an issue. Essentially I became self employed on 31st March 2008. That means that in the tax year 07 - 08 I was self employed for 6 days. In that time I earned no money, as I didn't invoice anything out until the end of April 08. The period 06 April 07 - 31 March 2008 was PAYE.

When completing my SA I have entered the details from my P45 for the employed period of the tax year. However, when trying to enter the income and expenses for my self employed period I get an error, and it is telling me that income and expenses should be greater than 0.

What should I do here? I didn't earn anything in those 6 days. I has assumed that my self employed tax etc would be taken care of in the 08-09 tax year.

Thanks for any help or advice

Tatsky

Have you selected an accounting period as yr end 5th April

think you can ignore s/e issue until next yr, although it may be in your interests to speak to an adviser about selecting the most suitable accounting period

    Hi There

Thanks for your help. For the "date your books are made up to" I entered 05 April 2009. Is this what you are referring to?

When you say to ignore SE, do you mean submit the SA containing only the employed part of the year? Would I need to inform HMRC in some way? I have an accountant who will be doing my return for the full S/E year (08-09), but I had assumed the first return for 6 days would be straight forward. I assumed wrong it seems.

Would it be worth me contacting HMRC for an exemption? Is that possible?

    Thanks

You haven't made books up to april 09 yet , so why mention it. for 5 days in 2207/2008 tax yr - feel just carry figures ( you say none!) forward- ask accountant about the miost suitable accounting period
