work wanting qualification after 30 years service

Please wish your mum luck. And reassure her that ANYONE going back to study after 30 years would feel overwhelmed! It sounds like a good idea to start with the SVQ, and see how that goes. As dooj says, this is a work-based qualification, BUT there may be some sessions at college and she should definitely have a supervisor / mentor / assessor - not sure what term they use for whoever helps you put your 'portfolio' together. If she feels overwhelmed by the requirements - and there is a LOT of paper involved! - then encourage her to ask for help and it ought to be available. The college should WANT her to succeed and offer her the support she needs, and so should her work.Signature removed for peace of mind0

I had a mentor when i did svq2 and did it all from home it may be different now but i had the mentor at my house and could phone her anytime I could have taken 2yrs to do it but did it in less time its not a case of passing an actual exam it based on the work you submit for svq anyway0

Please excuse me for being so rude, but is it possible your mum has poor literacy skills? Some people can mask it very well, 'pretending' to read the newspaper, having someone else deal with the bills, 'forgetting their glasses' when they're required to read something.
NVQs and SVQs are just showing knowledge of the job that's already being performed, and your mum must be excellent at her job with her long experience.
Poor literacy is extremely common in older people. Those classes of 60 kids sitting in rows were really not 'the good old days' in education.
Additional support is available to anyone who requires it on college courses.0
