The title of this thread is the response I get from HMRC when trying to submit my partnership tax return on line.
I am using third party software from Quality Management Software (QMS) called "SA200". I paid for it to to enable me to file the partnership tax return on line, as HMRC do not offer this facility yet. This software is one of many that HMRC list as approved software to file on line.
I get the following message:
THE RESPONSE FROM HM REVENUE AND CUSTOMS IS
UTR: ************
Taxpayer name: ************
Period end: 2008-04-05
Date and Time: 2009-01-26T21:41:46.717
Schedule:
Occurrence:
Error Box No:
Cross reference:
Message Code: 1046
Message Text: Authentication Failure. The supplied user credentials failed validation for the requested service.
(I have disguised my UTR and business name here for security reasons.)
The UTR I am using is my personal UTR, not that of my business partner, and of course I use my HMRC registered password.
When I prepare to file using QMS software, I am asked to supply my UTR, my HMRC password and a special code I had to pay for from QMS in order to use the software.
I am unsure whether I am doing something wrong in the filing process, or the HMRC site is down, or the software has some glitch that is not allowing HMRC to accept my partnership return. The only thing I can think of is the possibility that I should be entering my partnership tax reference, not my UTR as the form asks for. That doesn't add up though, as my password should only work in conjunction with my UTR.
A google search revealed similar messages with error code failure 1046, from a payroll software company. They attributed the failure to HMRC being offline to third party software at the time of filing. It didn't work for me for the majority of last night and this morning.
I will be filing my personal tax return on line using the HMRC website, not third party software. I am ready to file my personal tax return, but want to get the partnership tax return sorted out first. I have not attempted to file the personal return yet.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so, have you found a solution?
Many thanks for reading
Rick.

I have just had the same error trying to use this software. Did you manage to get yours to work?

I got something like that: " Authentication Failure. ............."
when trying to use the HMRC on-line self assessment system directly.
So I thought "finger trouble" ? and had a good look, noticing that it now says the input is not case sensitive??
So worried that I was mixing up UTR's and User ID's I resolved to go via the Government Gateway and to be sure to be sure I wrote out both codes and pasted them into position.
Gateway seemed to like that BUT when I arrived at "Self Assessment" another failure.
Tried UTR instead - that failed.
So I tried the 12 & 9 characters again (paying attention to case) and they worked.
Mouse trouble or gremlins?0
