Iceland sends Container of Winter Clothing to Hull

Icelandic broadcaster Heimir Karlsson said: "When we broadcast the story that UK pensioners were dying from the cold, our listeners could not believe their own ears. We decided to give the Icelandic nation four days to fill a 20ft container of pure Icelandic wool for the pensioners in Britain.

Well I hope when the container arrives that it makes the headlines here.
Our Gov should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

Seriously, how many pensioners are dying because of a lack of wool? The excess deaths in winter in this country are not because of hypothermia, but because people dress inappropriately for the weather, raising the chances of heart attacks and strokes. This whole story is designed to give the Icelandics a self righteous buzz.

Cold doesn't increase the chances of heart attacks or strokes.
Alot of old people get cold because they don't spend their winter fuel allowance on fuel.

I suppose they were trying to counteract the feeling many UK savers in Icelandic banks had when the country said that it wouldn't even try to honour its financial obligations overseas.

Possibly because they need it for food or electricity bills, or council tax.

Seems to me that any help can be put to good use.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

and they deserve a self righteous buzz if that's all they want, they haven't got much to feel good about at the moment have they??

cold weather payments do nothing to cover the cost of gas/eleci bill, so tell your government to stop making trivial self righteous gestures and cover the extra cost of the winter bills with your taxes.

maybee add a little extra for a winter wardrobe so they can venture out.
