CV for mum returning to FT work

Hi Chaps.
I'm helping my mum write up her CV to return to nursing, Since 1994 she has 2 p/t jobs in different industries, I'm not sure if I should list employment most recent - least recent meaning the nursing jobs would be read last or the other way round which would mean starting with jobs from as far back as 1981?

    Hi

You start with the most recent job first and work backwards. Write a small bit about what you did for the first two most recent jobs and then the rest you only need to put jobtitle, place of work and dates from and to.

  • She needs a skills based CV, not a standard chronological one.

A skills based CV highlights qualifications and the skills she has. The skills not only encompass work but also home as well.

You still list the jobs but you don't expand on the ones not related to the post being applied for but do expand on the duties involved in the relevent ones.

In addition to that, write a covering letter drawing attention to the relevent jobs that have been expanded on in the CV.

Ideally, you should never end up sending the same CV to two different jobs you're applying for, instead tailoring your CV to make it relevent to the vacancy. Too many people have a standard chronological CV which is sent to every place they're applying to and it doesn't get you interviews.

I successfully managed to get an interview for a technical job, even though I'd been lorry driving for 15 years and the last remotely related job was in 1994, simply by doing a skills based CV and promoting the skills and relevent jobs in it . They were only interviewing 6 people so I must've done something right. Up until that point, I'd been banging out the same standard chronological CV and getting nowhere with it.

Monster.co.uk has a good advice section regarding CVs and covering letters. It's worth a read.
