College in September-what am I entitled to?

Hi everyone

I am currently unemployed and am looking to go to college in September but will not be able to afford much as I will only be working part time. I am waiting for a job at Tescos when the new tax year starts (I have people on the inside!!) and will hopefully work full time from April until september but I don't think I will be able to afford to pay for tuition. I know that I should be able to get the adult learning grant (like adult's EMA) but I'm worried that I will be expected to pay a large amount of tuition fees upfront. It's an NVQ Level 2 in Professional Cookery I am looking to start.

Any help would be gratefully received!

thanks xxx

Your fee situation will depend on your existing qualifications. If you already have a full level 2 qualification you will have to pay fees and, unfortunately, you won't be eligible for ALG. If you don't have a level 2 qualification you will have your fees waived and get ALG.

A level 2 qualification includes any other NVQ 2, 5 GCSEs (grade C or over), or anything else equivalent.
  • I already have the 5 C or above GCSE's but I know I won't be able to afford the full tuition fees as well as the exam fees. I have heard about the learner support fund, does anyone know what this is?

I really want to do this course but just don't know how I can afford it.

The LSF is a college fund for students suffering from hardship; it might well fund your knives and cookery whites but is most unlikely to pay all your fees, unfortunately.

If you contact the Student Services at the college they would be able to advise you on what help might be available; many colleges will allow you to pay fees in instalments and may even pay a part if you get good reports for your work, it all depends on their budgets and your income.
  • may be late, but you can still claim...you are entitled to ALG up to your first Level 3 qual
  • okay, will look into it.

    Thanks
