How to afford the cost of BR?

Hi
It looks likely I will be going forward with BR however I'm worried about the cost of doing so....I'm not sure where I can get £400+ from. I'm single and on incapacity benefit and wondered if anyone knew if there is any concession for people on benefits or will it be possible for me to pay the court and OR fees by installments?
Also, how long does the whole BR process take.....from handing in the forms and getting a court date etc. ?
If anyone could let me know I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks.........RRD

Hi and welcome, if your solely on benfit then there is very good chance that you will not have to pay the £150 court fee, you will still have to pay the OR fee. you will have to pay on the day of your petition hearing. Ring your court and see how far ahead there appointments are, mine was only 10 days.
What debts do you have, can you stop paying them in order to save for BR? Who are your creditors, in rare cases they will file for your BR, saving you the fee! failing that ring either of the charities in my signature and see what advice they can offer regarding help twds the cost. keep posting and let us know the outcome

Thanks for your reply!

The debts I have are mainly with two banks which have now been sold on to collection companies. I haven't paid anything towards my debts for a while now......although I have made offers.....I was in contact CCCS some time ago and they suggested I offer £5 per month on each debt but the creditors laughed at me......one of them did anyway and none of them would accept the offer......If I'm honest I put the paperwork at the back of a cupboard and tried to ignore it because I didn't know how to cope with it.
I'm on top of my rent, c.tax and utilities right now and want to keep it that way so I'm not able to save the money from not paying. Not to worry.....if I don't have to pay the £150 court fees it is a start and I will phone the CCCS tomorrow......I'm off to the CAB as well.
I will keep posting, thanks Hadenoughnow......such a huge relief to be talking about it all!!

Hi River, i would ask the CCCS about Debt reliefs orders they are about to be introduced shortly.
I believe its designed for people with hardly any surplus and that cannot afford the fees of BR, but your debts get wiped clean in 12 months usually.
Its been posted on here, but i've looked and i can't find it.
I will keep looking, if i find it or a link i will post it for you.
Just thought i'd let you know that there is another way in dealing with this.
Good luck.0 -
There you go River that didn't take long try this link.
A different site but another very useful one.

Thanks Costus
I found a link earlier today and had a look but my debts exceed 15,000 so I don't think I'd be elligible for a DRO unfortunately.....I'm going to the CAB tomorrow and will certainly ask.
Failing all else I might put myself up for adoption! I really am ready to give anything a go!! :eek:0 -
Good luck at the CAB tomorrow then River.
I like your idea of the adoption route.......... Damn it, why didn't i think of that !:rotfl:0 -

I'll let you all know how it goes at the CAB....I'm hoping to get an actual appointment with someone who knows all about BR however I live in a small town and I'm sure my CAB like many is quite stretched at the moment. I'm going to call the CCCS as well.
btw....I hear the Pitt/Jolie's are looking to adopt another.....as my lovely Mum says....you don't ask you don't get! lol
All the best

I hate to be a damp squib but i never got that much out of going to the CAB.
Not wishing to sound cocky but, I felt that at times i knew more than what the advisers where saying. (I know how that sounds).
I got better advice from Welfare rights, if you have one locally it might be worth popping in.
Good luck.0 -
If you don't mind me asking.... what are you incapacitated for? There is a number called Association Of Charity Officers that could help you (they are an umbrella of all charities in the UK so they can signpost you to the best charities for you). Their number is 01707 651777. Who are your gas and electricity suppliers? Some of them do Trust Funds that can help with bankruptcy costs. Try them.0

When you are at the CAB also ask if their are any local charities who may help.
Do you go to church? Some ministers have a discretionary fund that they can use to help parishoners.
One poster advertised her microwave, sofa etc. in the local paper and got the money hat way. Then went on Freecycle and picked up replacements for free.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0
