Hello janie63

I'll move your thread to the 'Employment, Jobseeking & Training' board, where it should get more responses.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

Regards

I have recently set up a union membership for my daughter with Unite. It took about 15 minutes to join online. Union fees can be paid by monthly direct debit from your bank account so no need to tell your employer if you don't want to. Monthly cost is between £5 - £10 depending on hours worked, occupation etc.;)
• Hi,

Check out:

It doesn't matter which union you join if your employer does not recognise any.

The above website is by the TUC and it lists every union in the country.

Hope this helps, I'm a member of Prospect by the way, and their pretty good at individual representation.....and cheep too!!!

I'm with unite too. They have been helpful and got me out if a sticky situation that would have got me fired - was given one upgrade to roll out which aparently took 8mins, but 10 mins was allowed. The fastest one i did was 50mins and the slowest nearly 4 hours, but there were many slow ones, did I mention 4000 PCs to roll it out on to. Later the same job but much upgraded got given to my manager's manger who was the person who selected me and he got [strike]fired[/strike], er resigned.

One big point is not to tell your employer that you are in a union.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

Try and choose a union affiliated to the TUC.

Put the money on a horse, you have seven horses, one has to win. Give your money week in week out to a union and they win, most are useless. If you work for as bus/train/post office/teacher then yes, if not forget it, and do the horses.

I used to be a member of Prospect and wouldn't touch them with a bargepole - I found that their representation was diabolical and when it came to an employment tribunal they decided to settle without my permission and tried fraudulently to con me into signing a COT3 form for a settlement which was half of what I eventually got after giving them the sack. Prospect are like PCS full of loonie lefties:rolleyes: Prospect are not interested in representing Secretaries, only engineers and civil servants.

Unison is pretty good and it has lots of member benefits too - holiday village in Croyde Bay, Devon, free courses so you can learn all sorts of stuff. etc.etc.

Worth finding out which ones specialise in your industry/sector even if they are not recognised. My personal experience is that unions are horrifically understaffed and so it makes it much easier of they are already familiar with your area. I used one where they were recognised and they were very good. My husband used one where they were not and they were a waste of time.
