Clubcard/Nectar points confusion

Hi
I have a Nectar card + Nectar Amex and a Clubcard + Tesco Finest Mastercard. Im trying to figure out which pairing is best to use and when.
Shopping at Sainsburys using the Nectar pairing gives me 12 points for every £3 spent. In cash terms thats 6p per £3. (Is that right?)
At Tesco using the other pairing I will receive 2 clubcard points for every £3 spent. In cash terms thats 2p per £3. (If Im right, that seems pretty tight compared to Nectar.)
Shopping at Tesco.com with same pairing will give me 3 points for every £3 spent. In cash terms thats 3p per £3. Although any saving here is offset by the nasty £4 delivery charge.

Outside of the supermarkets, if I spent £20 in say Woolworths:
Using Nectar Amex - I would receive 40 Nectar points equivalent to 20p, (again is that correct?)
Using Tesco Mastercard - I would receive 10 clubcard points equivalent to 10p (is that right - my brain is hurting now)
It seems using the Nectar family of cards beats Clubcard by a mile.
Can someone check my maths, have I got the sums right?

If you use your tesco points for days out etc you will get a lot more than 2p per £3.000

It depends whether you're going to use Clubcard vouchers or not.
If you base it on cash, then Nectar might be best, but Clubcard vouchers are in effect 4 x cash, but it does tie you into certain things.
We love using our clubcard vouchers for days out - Legoland, Fleet Air Arm, Tank Museum etc.
Nectar vouchers are used at Adams, as they are worth £5
Not sure this helps, but thought I'd reply anyway!!0 -
I'm not sure about the rules of Sainsburys, and especially Nectar Amex.
But if you spend £3 in Tesco supermarket (or online) you should get 3 clubcard points on your clubcard account (3 points = 3p)
Use the Tesco Mastercard to pay and you will receive an extra point. You receive 1 point for every £2 spent (in addition to the standard points for your clubcard)
That should give you 4 points in total, which will equal 4p off a future shop in Tesco, once you've collected enough points (or alot more if you spend your clubcard vouchers wisely - the the separate thread about how best to use Tesco clubcard vouchers )
HTH - maybe someone else could better explain the Sainsburys/Amex offerings.
Personally I choose to shop @ Tesco more than Sainsbury because I find Tesco usually have slightly lower prices and therfore I save more than 1p or 2p per £1 on the bill - I see clubcard/nectar points as a bonus, not a reason for choosing one company over another. Having said that, went to Morrisons today and got some cheap Heinz baked beans (3 for 90p) - no points at all."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
OK thanks for the posts guys...
Just to recap using your info Premier and changing the amount to £4:
Shopping at Sainsburys using the Nectar pairing gives me 16 points for every £4 spent. In cash terms thats 8p per £4. (£1 spent = 2 points from Nectar Card and 2 points from Nectar Amex. Each point is worth 0.5p as I understand)
At Tesco using the other pairing I will receive 6 clubcard points for every £4 spent. In cash terms thats 6p per £4. (4 points from Clubcard and 2 points from TPF)
Shopping at Tesco.com with same pairing will give me 8 points for every £4 spent. In cash terms thats 8p per £4, the same as Nectar. (4 points from Clubcard and 4 points from TPF)
Outside of the supermarkets, if I spent £4 in say Woolworths:
Using Nectar Amex - I would receive 4 Nectar points equivalent to 2p (1 Nectar point for every £1 spent)
Using Tesco Mastercard - I would receive 2 clubcard points equivalent to 2p (1 Clubcard point for every £2 spent).
I wonder which petrol station would give the best points return - Tesco, Sainsburys or BP? Does the Amex offer of 4 points for every £1 apply in a Sainsburys petrol station?
So which is the best pair of cards for everyday shopping? Myself, I would probably go for using the Nectar pair for two reasons. Firstly, you seem to get more points for your £ from Nectar and Sainsburys is my local supermarket. They also have some great deals on banking, telephone, insurance and personal finance which have Nectar rewards for joining. Secondly the Nectar website is excellent with a more wide range of 'partners' then Clubcard. I agree Clubcard points can be used for 'days out'...but choosing to go on a day trip just because you have Clubcard points would result in the spending of even more money on fuel and food that you wouldnt have spent in the first place! I would rather plough any reward points back into discounts on the weekly food shop. :beer:0
