Getting hold of previous bank statements

Hi all,
Still in early stages of considering bankruptcy. Hubby and I have £15000 of credit card debt, accumulated over past 8 years. Apart from our wedding, a holiday and car repairs, this debt has grew largely due to a shortfall between income and expenditure. We certainly don't live a life of luxury! Anyway, my prob is this. I have only ever kept 1 years worth of bank and credit card statements. We did not use our credit cards at all last year, only for balance transfers. I am worried that when the OR asks us to explain our debts, we will be unable to give enough detail. Can we ask credit card companies to send us back copies of statements for free or is there a charge? My Hubby thinks i am worrying too much but if the OR has a copy of our records and starts probing, then i think we should be prepared.
:o Many thanks.

The OR wont want a copy of your credit card statements, just how much you owe, as for your bank statements, they will usually only want 12 months, if they want more, dont worry, they will have the power to get them

My OR interview is on 16th Feb. They have asked me to send them 12 months of bank and credit card statements and the last 3 payslips.

There are plenty of people who do not keep their statements and the OR can request them from the creditors if that is the case.

  • Thanks for the replys.
I won't have trouble providing last 12 months phewww but as the debt was mostly accrued beforehand, abit here and abit there I am still unsure how much detail the OR will require when asking us to explain our debts. Do you think it would be a good idea to gain copies for our own piece of minds?
    Thanks again.:o

I don't think so.... they might even try and charge you, let the OR do it.
If you have got 12 months statements then that is exactly what they ask for!
The fact the debts were run up before then will work in your favour as to remembering. Lots of people are quite vague, it just seems to happen, doesn't it.. robbing Peter to pay Paul, it just becomes a way of life... until it gets too much.

The OR asked for 12 months bank and credit card statements from me but I have heard some people have been asked more and some people have not been asked for any. As many have said above, the OR can get hold of the statements if you don't have all statements they require. During the OR interview, they may ask how the debts were run up so you can explain the balance transfers then.

You should read up on Debt Relief Orders. These are similar to bankruptcy but will cost less (£100 fee rather than £345/£495 for bankrupty). Due to start in April. Debts need to be less than £15,000. More information on here.

Just give them what you have and explain you don't keep them - its not a crime. They can get any info they want anyway. Its one thing you are paying them to do.

  • Hi charliecharge. I'm not much help but just a thought to help you out. Are you registered with internet banking with your bank? If so you can print off 12 months bank statements online. Even if you don't send them you can have a good look yourself.
