the important thing to remember when ringing debt collection companies or collections departments, if always tell them what u can pay, don't ask.. if you ask they will give u a slightly increased figure than the actual lowest.. the reason for this is due to the fact the the collector will earn a lot more commision if they can squeeze a little bit extra out of everyone! If you tell them... i will clear the debt now if you will accept £xxx, as long as its reasonable it shouldn't be a problem.. just tell them that if they don't accept it then your only option is to pay a tiny sum, that should help them to decide, because from the collectors point of view any clearance is much better than an arrangment plan for them!

do you think they would still accept a 50% offer with such as small amount?

If you've already knocked them down a bit.. it would be harder to get somethign like 50%, try and see if they'll accept a little less, go for £150 to start with then they'll keep trying to raise it. i think you should be able to get it at somewhere around the £200 mark depending on the company your dealing with!
