bigger quantities not better value...

How many others are here take a look at the *p per 100g or whatever that are on price labels out of curiosity? I've really noticed in supermarkets that it's not always the case that buying larger amounts or bigger packs is a better value option. For example I noticed this with Colgate toothpaste and cheese triangles in Sainsburys. I would have thought the bigger tube of toothpaste or 16 triangles instead of 8 would have worked out cheaper, apparently not when you look at the cost per 100ml or per piece...
From the looks of it, at normal price it's cheaper to buy two of the smaller size than the bigger one...
I'm looking more at this now when I buy things...

I look at the SEL's to check on products like coffee etc (love the fact they tell you the price per 100g) and am always pointing out to my mum the price per Kg on fruit and veg compared to prepacked stuff even when it's on offer!

They aren't always better value. Not that I buy it all the time, beer and cider I've noticed it on quite often. The 4 pack price per litre is less than the 10 and 12 packs. Often happens because the 10 and 12 packs are in smaller cans than the 4 packs - so they are not better value!

a bit off topic but it annoys me that some supermarkets list the price per 100g/ml for some things and then price per kg/litre on others. I think its a blatant attempt to confuse.

I had to tell my Gran how much a kg was not that long ago. At 77 she has never came across it

Always- one of my first posts on here was on the same subject.
I started checking after finding we'd been paying quite a bit more for a pack of 80 tea bags than we would have been for 2x40.

And yes, I've spotted the attempts to confuse too! Most noticeably on the Tesco fruit/fibre cereal stuff the OH buys. Two identical products, side by side- prices shown differently.:rolleyes:

Heinz Tomato Sauce is another one, the small glass bottle is normally the cheapest but a few pence per 100g compared tot he same sauce in the big squeezy plastic bottle

Another thing I have picked this up on is nappies - currently buying pampers pull up's size 5's & it is often the smaller pack rather than the big box that works out at a better price.

Nescafe the huge 1kg tin is always more expensive per 100g than the 300g/200g and often even the 100g jars!

Normally that is because they put the 200g ones on offer!

However in Tesco on Friday, the Tesco own brand Gold coffee was better value in the 200g size than the 300g size, but of course the 200g had sold out!
