    Hi Batgirl,

Well even when you are undischarged you can get a bank account with Co-op (Cashminder Account) or Barclays (Card Cash Account) which now both have cards that you can use for buying fuel and shopping so i would give them a try first.

As for when you discharged well you hear mixed things about the other banks allowing bank accounts but the chances are they will only be basic accounts like the ones above.

Personally i would go for the Cashminder which is an excellent account and a firm favourite.

I think your friend will find it difficult to get any kind of account other than a basic one but as k2nga says Coop has an electron card that can be used and just recently the Barclays account has a connect card so she shouldn't have any problems opening either of those accounts.

  • I am using CO-OP cashminder and they have been great. My solicitor thinks that they are the best ones as they are more a people bank serving the community kinda thing. Like they have shops, funeralcare etc etc
  • Hi We had Nat West account with a solo card when we went BR and were allowed to keep it as thats were the salary was paid into. Some forecourt petrol "pay at pump" won't accept debit cards though although you can use it in the petrol station at the chip n pin machine
