Following all the tips in my sig would be a good first step!
It still amazes me at the number of people who only try and find a dentist when they have a toothache, or look for the cheapest one, or the flashiest ad in Yellow pages, or the one doing NHS.
VISIT practices and meet the staff before booking an appointment.
Staff are not happy and helpful and friendly if they work for a completely ham-fisted moron and are dealing with complaints all day every day.
Dentists trying to screw the last bit of profit out of every patient will not have a nicely decorated and furnished waiting room with a decent collection of magazines.

When you have a shortlist VISIT practices.
When you find somewhere you like, with prices you can afford, book an appointment. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0
