Other peoples houses generally seem cleaner, and we are more relaxed as even if we spot something needing doing, we don't have to do it!

Don't have kids in the house:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Have fewer clothes (less laundry) one on, one in the wash, one in the drawer
Get up at 6am so the housework can be done by 9am!
Clean as you go along
Clean while your are waiting for something else....wipe the counter while the kettle is boiling, wipe the bathroom sink while brushing teeth etc
Take out one thing at a time then put it away
Don't have any clutter
Don't have any books
Wash up/dry up straight after a meal

I come from a long line of houseproud women...but I didn't inherit the gene LOL
My mum's house is always tidy - and it always was, even when she had two kids at home. What thriftmonster said above stuck a chord with me - I've always loved books, but was never allowed to keep them ("what's the point in keeping it, sure you've read it!") As others have said, we weren't allowed to make a mess, even temporarily.
My grandmother would have things put away almost before you put them down. If you set down your book to get a drink, you'd come back to find the book gone - and she'd never admit to having seen it, never mind touched it! She came home from a holiday in the US once with some wool in her suitcase; half an hour after she'd unpacked, I asked where it was and she denied having put it away - but it was seven months before we found it again. She used to tidy up before leaving the house, and we'd say, "Who are you tidying up for? The burglars?" - and she'd reply, "The minister might come!" It didn't do any good pointing out that even if the minister did come, he wouldn't get in because there was nobody home! LOL
But I think people had a lot less *stuff* - certainly as a child I didn't have nearly as much as my children do (and most of their friends have more than them). We had a TV, but there was no VCR, DVD player, freeview box, satellite receiver etc. In the kitchen there were no microwaves and George Foreman grills and all the other paraphernalia so many of us have today. No computer in the corner of the dining-room, no PlayStations (and collections of games), etc. When you think how much more we have in our homes, it's not very surprising we've a harder time keeping up with it all...0 -
I'm afraid there are books in every room in my house as I am an avid reader(even the loo!)I do try to wade through them all and I have a big box from Wilkinsons that they go in as I have read them then when full get carted to the charity shop.I even get books from the library as well. I often read my book in the evening rather than watch rubbish on t.v.. I can hardly remember a night when I haven't read before sleeping for years. My late husband used to say I was addicted to books ,although he too was a reader.0
