  • How is that sex discrimination??
You chose to put the bills in only your name - most Mr and Mrs both work these days.
You say that you are sure that many women are in that situation - well why? its 2006.

Is she on the voters roll? they could check that.
They have rules in place and have to stick by them.

Oh and don't they stick to them...!
  • Give up. I've just read the thread in full. Give up.

They are the worst bunch of incompetent imbeciles - this is just a taste of what it's like to have an account with them  Keep it in the biscuit tin :rotfl:

Appreciate this may not be the advice you are looking for and may, in a certain light, appear to be unhelpful but, BELIEVE ME (surely this experience has taught you something), avoid - bargepoles

  • Hi CopperPlate,
Actually I think that is pretty good advice :)

You are not the first person to say that to me.
When I mentioned this somewhere else, I instantly got two people expressing the same view.

Having contacted a number of banks, I've got a pretty good impression of their customer service from the way they have reacted. Some have come back instantly by email, others, like Cahoot didn't reply until I followed up on my application.
I know I'm only one person, so the 'survey' is very limited, but I have to say that with some banks things get setup without any problem very quickly, and with others there are just odd silly things, like not sending all the forms out, and then being asked for what I didn't send back !
Others are just plain impossible to deal with.............

I would suggest that anyone looking for good service purposely do something wrong in your application, and see what happens. If it gets sorted quickly, you can be pretty sure that's the sort of service you'll get, and you find out before giving them your money :)

Whilst I understand the inconvenience, this is really for your own protection. It stops anyone else opening an account - or worse, getting credit - by impersonating your wife.
But she would be on the electoal register,so once again an example of over-kill the government putting out legislation Nanny state

Given that electoral register data of a lot of people is freely available all over the web, it's hardly something that could be used for proof of ID purposes.

But it does confirm an address that a customer lives at. No scheme will ever be 100% fraud proof as you could walk into a bank with a false passport and open an account.

One thing i find really odd about ID. . i just dont get it. . . .

I have applied for accounts with Capital One, Nationwide, Alliance and Leicester and more recently Northern Rock (yes these were all credit products but im working my way out of debt, hopefully debt free in 16 months-ish). The important thing is that not one of these companies wanted ID from me. Why does cahoot?

Had so much trouble opening my savings account with them it was unbeleivable!

Some banks now have what they call Electronic Identification and Verification.
Not sure what they check but an electoral roll and Experian search for sure.
