Problem with Self Assessment online

in Cutting tax
OK I've left things late. Started with the Self Assessment online in Jan 2009.
Went to log in/register online to do the SA. OK so far but they then tell me they will send the Activation PIN by post.
Unfortunately I'm now overseas and no one is able to pick up my PIN and forward it to me.
I phone their Customer Service number and was passed round all the houses spending over an hour on the phone trying to get an answer. No email of course.
Finally told that if I change my house address to that of my address overseas and then request another Activation PIN then another will be posted to my overseas address.
Fine, thanks.
But although post generally takes less then a week to arrive here from UK it's now nearly 3 weeks and no Activation PIN.
They've said they won't or can't give me the PIN by phone as they have no way of knowing what it is.
I think I've blown it.
But can anyone offer me any advice on how to get the PIN or what my best course of action is.
Thanks.

You have a couple of options here:
So you can either wait for your activiation PIN and then file online and be late
or (and i personally would do this)
From HMRC download and print off the paper return and send it in before the deadline (send registered post if possible)
But what you need to do whichever way you file the return is to pay your tax before the 31st, so you need to calculate this yourself (i know this is easier said than done but if you've sent the paper return in and paid your tax it will remove any penalties applied), even if you send in too much money it will be refunded to you.
Hope that helps0 -

I was considering sending in the paper return.
Unfortunately don't think it will get to UK prior to 31 January.
Will they look at the post mark date?
And I don't believe I will have any tax to pay.
Should I just send the GBP 100 for late payment and see how they decide to refund or not?
Where do I find out how to pay the tax/
Your help much appreciated. No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
If it's a simple return that you could give the info easily over email or phone you could get an accountant to submit online - it can then be done without your own online id needing to be activated.
Brings in other questions such as complying with money laundering regs as to proving you are you you say you are etc etc etc..........Insert amusing tagline here..........0 -
A) Will they look at the post mark date?
And I don't believe I will have any tax to pay.
A) No. It's the date of receipt that's relevant ... not the date of posting. In which case the late filing penalty will also be reduced to £zero when the Return is processed. So don't pay anything up front.
But you will need to self-calculate on the paper return to qualify your liability? If it does prove you owe something you can pay by BACS or on your Debit Card (via their BillPay link). Any late filing penalty would then be either the sum you owe - or £100 - whichever is the lesser sum.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
The activation pin only lasts for so long and then you have to reapply
