    Hmmm, that's a bummer!

I know the company I worked for have increased the retirement age from 60 to 65.

From what I can gather from ex-colleagues, there's no phasing in of this change - unlike the Government did when they changed the age that women's state pension would be paid.

The thought had occurred to me my employer might do the same thing - or make us work harder and longer for the same money - or for less money. All things to put into the equation. The thought of still doing this job at an age when my old man was too old and ill to work or do anything else scares the bejeebers out of me.OK - I'm lucky to have a job, before anyone reminds me!

Unfortunately the "protestant work ethic" (or "catholic guilt") tells me I should keep my nose to the grindstone until I get taken away in a wooden box.

I retire in October and although i will be 60 i am loathe to let go after nearly 24 years.
I know that we will manage financially and i love everyminute of it but it's going to be the letting go that will be the hard part, its been part of my life as much as anything else. So unless something untoward happens i think i have decided to work part time, take my company pension and defer my state pension, but can anyone tell me that if i defer my state pension is it paid into my estate if i die in the meantime. I have asked on another thread but didnt get an answer

I'm in a similar position. For years I looked forward to retirement but my circumstances have changed and I'm on my own. So, keeping busy is good for me. I could manage on my work pension (I'm grateful to be in a final salary scheme). The AVC I took out 15 years ago won't yield much now, unfortunately. I still like my job.I intend to downsize and move when I do retire so, with the way things are at the moment, I intend to soldier on for another year. Perhaps.

I'm on my own too Contessa, but manage well on my income in retirement. I've turned down two part-time paid jobs and now work one day a week volunteering in a hospital. I'd say to those who can access a pension as well as their state one, try retirement and if you don't like it go back to work part time. (You won't!)
