Help finding a venue!

I've not long lived in the area, so don't know where to start looking for venues. I'm looking in the Bishops Stortford/Saffron Walden area. Can any one help? The only ones I've found so far are so expensive and want a minimum of 80 people to the sit down.

Not exactly in the area but not that far, redcoats farmhouse hotel at Little Wymondley near Hitchin. www.redcoats.co.uk We got married there 2 years ago and it was absoloutely fabulous. We had 50 guests all day with an extra 20 in the evening. It isn't the cheapest you'll find but you won't get stung with hidden extras and the quality is absoloutely superb. I couldn't have wished for a more perfect day, the food was sensational, the staff were attentive but discreet and we had the whole place to ourselves. It has real charm, we got married in the conservatory, then went into the gardens for photos whilst they set up the conservatory for our wedding breakfast. We then had a casino in the old kitchen which is a lovely small dining room usually with big open fireplace. WHilst we were having fun with the casino the staff changed the conservatory again for our live band. It has a cosy bar and small lounge as well so there was somewhere to suit everyone. I seriously could not recommend this beautiful place any more highly! It was so special as the atmosphere was so relaxed all day.
  • You live near me!!!!!!!! :)

Have a look at The Crown House in Great Chesterford, lovely gardens and very flexible on requirements. Will do a BBQ meal etc. I've had a few conversations with them and its my favorite locally but we're now thinking of getting married in Dorset where the family live.

Or what about the cricketers in clavering? Jamie Oliver's dads pub, the food is :)

How much are you thinking as a budget?
  • Thank you both, The Redcoats one looks lovely, but quite pricey and for a minimum of 100 guests  at £120 each!

I have tried to make appointments and get information from the crown house, but they never get back to me. My cousin is getting married there this year and is having the same problems so that one is a definate no-no, which is a shame because its supposed to be really nice. :(

Are there anymore hotels that do receptions in this area?
We are looking to pay no more than £40 per person for the wedding breakfast and are having 50 for the sit-down and 120 in the evening.

I just dropped in the crown house on spec, picked up a brochure and had a look around. Then went back to ask some questions. Sorry you didn't have a good experience, I got the impression from them that they'd be really flexible.

Theres a hotel in the centre of Saffon Walden, think its called the Saffron Hotel. have you thought of any of these:

    Great hallingbury Hall
    Little Hallingbury Mill
    Bury Lodge
Parklands (they do a great package if you will get married midweek out of season and even better at last minute http://www.lastminuteweddings.co.uk/)
    Manor of Groves

If you want a Saturday in the summer I think you may struggle with only wanting 50, crazy isn't it as thats a lot of people! If you'll look at a different day or a winter wedding you should get a different response.

    Hi Danilou,

Recoats £120 per person for minimum of 100 guests is for a marquee so that price per person includes them hiring in a big marquee and furniture which is why it's so much more. If you're just using the main house there is no minimum. We had 50 guests and the sample menu on there is £38 per head. Because we got married on Good friday they didn't charge us a venue fee so we literally just paid for food although we also opted for a free bar limited to beer, wine and soft drinks.
We had Thai slamon fishcakes with chilli sauce to start, roast lamb with seasonal veg for main and a trio of creme brulee, chocolate mousse and apple tart with brown bread ice cream and it was one of the best meals I've ever had, definately not like alot of weddings where it is mass produced and heated in a microwave. We stayed in the honeymoon suite which is called Bobbie's room and was £95 inc breakfast (this was 2 years ago though).
It's owned by Peter and Jackie a brother and sister who grew up there and have turned it into a beautiful restaurant with rooms. I think this is why it still keeps such a homely atmosphere. The gardens are stunning for photo's as well.
