Job Grade Increase Dependant On Increasing P/T Hours? Is This Fair?

It has been strongly hinted that at my next assessment in a few weeks time I will be offered my next grade if i agree to more hours (curently work part-time 3 days but do not want to increase my hours until my son who is 2 is at school and have told my boss this on several occasions.)

Now this does not seem fair to me in that my grade increase is based on the previous years work and not on what I will be doing in the future.

Does anyone know if I have any legal standing - I appreciate part-time hours is one of those grey areas!

Are you really writing of a grade or a spinal point in the grade?

What do you mean by this?

In regards to the hours, if a higher grade position requires more hours, because of extra duties for example, then they're entitled to have that as a condition.

It appears that your appraisal indicates that you are capable of a higher grade job. Well done.

In order for you to take on that job, they would want you to do longer hours.

If you want the grade job but not the hours, as you have you a young child you could ask them to consider a request to work reduced hours in that grade. As you know, they don't have to agree to your request.

it's illegal to treat part time staff differently from full time staff. if the job can be done part time (and you will know better than us if this is the case) then there should be no reason to ask you to increase your hours.

However, employers have the right ot consider the needs of the service when considerign requests for pt work.

If the post would integrate better with the set up of the organisation / delivery of business or the work patterns of other employees at XX hours and you want to do 25% less than theat, they do not have to grant your request, only explain why they won't grant it.
