Forklift training

Counter balance/reach etc. Has anyone done these before, what were they like and more importantly how much did they cost ?

Ive looked on the Rtitb website, they give very vague info of places that do training with no cost details either. Ive googled each company and still got very little info on them. thanks

  • You're looking at about £500 for each type of licence. If you have no spatial awareness, you're going to struggle.

  • Its not that much, most places are about £200/£300 depending on if you have any in house training or experience.
courses are from 2/5 days again depending on above.
The training its self is very simple really, moving some pallets safely around showing awarness, going through a chicane again showing awarness and not touching.

I was a forklift driver for just over 3 years.

if you are unemployed ask jobcentreplus they will arrange or tell you where to go for a free course but you might have to wait of upto six months.

if you have been made redundant recently then you can go on training straight away or within 3-4 weeks.

i think you have to do counterbalance before reach but i am 100% sure

I have both licences (though it is a number of years since I've driven a reach truck). Trainers will say that the reach truck is the more difficult to learn. If you are a novice then the recommended course duration is 4.5 days. It can be less if you pick it up quickly and you have plenty of driving time as opposed to hours spent watching other candidates mess it up.

Licences are specific to each type of truck. Places to learn tend now to be run by local councils though there are still some private sector trainers. Probably your best place to look is in your local yellow pages. Give some a ring for prices etc. As others have said try and get somebody else to pay for it. Also having a FLT licence will make you more valuable in the work place though you may not get paid more.

It's not true that you have to do counter balance before reach however I would agree that generally speaking it is easier to drive a C/B than Reach.

TokoCHick is pretty much spot on with the timescale /cost as far as I am aware. A novice will take a minimum of 3 days. It all depends on trainer candidate ratio. 1 trainer can do a maximum of 3 candidates at a time but for 3 at a time you are looking at 5 day course.

The cost I am less sure of as I am an in house instructor (CAT 1) although I am thinking about getting my CAT 2 as like a lot of people my job is at risk at the moment.

My employer is about to be taken over and some consolidation will be inevitable. So if anyone wants an in house forklift instructor in the southwest PM me!!!

if your unemployed ask the job centre although usually they give you blunt answers like you need to be unemppoloyed 6 months before you qualify worth a try. If you live in Scotland you can apply for ILA £200 and there's a place in Glasgow,Ibrox does the course for £300 so you pay only £100 wait a year later and you can do another one for the same price.

I done mine via the princes trust.

I done the Reach Truck first but it was very difficult to get the hang off as i had never driven before, But kept going and got the hang of it.

Passed the counterbalance very easily after having 4-5 days on the reach truck.

It's a simple process to pass these test's, The major worries for you would be to be aware at all times and always look around the truck before manouvring.

Prices are variable between £200-£400 but it does depend what company your doing it with.
