Boy's Bike - Stabiliser Broken after 4 weeks...

We bought a boys bicycle from Argos as a Christmas present for my son.
We first purchased in late November/early December. When I opened the box I discovered it wasn't as advertised so we got it replaced for the pictured one.

The bike was built a few days before Christmas then placed in the shed until it was wrapped on Christmas Eve.

Due to the weather, my son (2 1/2 yrs old) hasn't been able to actually go outside on it, so he's pedalled it around the house intermitantly for the last couple of weeks.

Yesterday tragedy struck - one of the stabiliser wheels snapped clean off!!
The bracket it was attached to is still on the bike, but the wheel is not.

He's now left without a bike to ride.....

So the question is - without a receipt, where do we stand in terms of a replacement?

    How did you pay?
If you paid by plastic you can take a bank statement to the store you bought it from, staff can identify the bike from the old catalogue and no doubt trace the sale on the system (this can only be done from the store you bought it from).
If you don't have a statement, ie paid by cash/vouchers you may be hard pressed - if you can remember the exact date and approximate time you went in go back to the store and they may be able to trace it.

Do you have anything that identifies that it was bought from Argos?
As a guide we don't use any barcodes or serial numbers on boxes and products, only our 7 digit numbers ###/#### or ###-####.

  • We actually found the receipt in the end (which is bizarre as normally they get lost within 5 mins).
Went back to the store with the bike and wheel in hand. The best they could do was give us the stabilisers they sell, but for free.
I'm guessing this is because it was outside the 30 day return policy as we'd bought on 30th November. Regardless that it wasn't built until 24th December and had only had 10 days use at best.

Interestingly there is a feedback about the product on the website, from another customer who had the same exact problem - stabiliser broken within a few days use - indoors!
