We have recently won our case on reducing our tax band. Fantastic, thanks to Martin and the guys who have contributed to this site. After a while we decided to change our water supply to meter as there are only two of us in the house. We have noticed that the water bill was worked out on the rateable value of the house. This, we have just proven, has been wrong for the last X number of years. Has anybody tried to get a rebate using this principle. We would be very interested to hear your experiences.

Although Rateable Values are still used for calculation of water rates, the legislation which permitted RVs to be altered was repealed with effect from 1 April 1990. Therefore as the RV cannot be legally altered your Water Authority will no doubt argue that they have to charge on existing RV, so as this cannot be changed there cannot be any refund.

Rateable Value and Council Tax band are not the same, although pre 1 April 1990, RV was used by councils in a similar way as CT for raising revenue.
