Done a massive batch of spag bol today, half to eat now and half to take on our camping trip at the weekend. Used a bottle of passata and two tins of chopped toms. Went to wash the tins to recycle them and one of them is rusty inside, and when I wipe it there's black gunk on the cloth. Will we be poorly do you think? And what's the best course of action - speak to the local health inspector or ring the company direct? Obviously not going to eat it now, but really cross cos the mince on its own cost £6!!0

I would just eat it personally. Tin oxide is not toxic unless you inhale large quantaties (neither is iron oxide commonly called rust but that is not what you have got). Steel oxidises (rusts) easily which is why steel cans have a coating of tin, which is less prone to corrosion to protect them, not because oxidisation will result in food poisoning but because it will give the food a slight metallic taste and weaken the can. Tin will also eventually be corroded by acidic conditions (like fruit juice or tomatoes) which is what has happened with your can. It is not a health risk and does not indicate a fault with the can, only that it has been stood a long time.0
