Do i need self assessment ??

Having been self employed for a number of years, work dried up and the last tax year i had none. I cashed in a small pension and lived off that as well as savings and the wifes wages. I had a few health problems and decided to have a year out only retuning to work last september.
The question is ,do i need to file a tax return when i din't earn anything ?
I've tried filling in the self assessment online but it will not continue after i put zero in the total earning box.
I've tried to phone the tax office but the woman couldn't help me and told me to contact the paye section. Tried a few times but couldn't get through.
Just wondered if anyone here has any ideas , Thanks

  • If you were issued with a tax return you need to complete it and send it back to the Revenue, whether or not you earned anything. You could try putting £1 in the total earnings if it won't work any other way.
    Lost 2 stone 12.5lbs since February 2011. :j
