Hi
My husband has been a fulltime carer for our son for the last 5 years receiving carers allowance. He is now returning to work and i am taking over the care for our son.
The question we have is where does he get his p45 from to give to his new employer, and will it state he has been getting carers allowance.
Thanks in advance.

Your husband needs to ask his employer for a form P46.
If the carers allowance is paid to you, even though it is a taxable benefit your income from it should not not be enough to incur a liability. YOur husband can then mark 'X' in box A in the bottom left hand corner of the form P46.
If payable to him, he should tick box B0 -
Thanks for your reply.
Its still payable to him at the moment - he's had a job offer which he's accepted but doesn't start for a fortnight, which is when we are informing them of the changeover from him to me.
I have a feeling a p46 can be downloaded from the internet??
When he gets the p46,he ticks box B?0 -
Which box does he tick,A or B?as he hasn't had any other job apart from being a full time carer for our son at home,so do they class being a carer as a job or notThe form says:Your present circumstances
Read all the following statements carefully and enter 'X'
inthe one box that applies to you.
A– This is my first job since last 6 April and
I have notbeen receiving taxable Jobseeker's
Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit
or a state or occupational pension.
OR
B– This is now my only job, but since last 6 April
I havehad another job, or have received
taxable Jobseeker's Allowance or Incapacity
Benefit. I do not receive a state or
occupational pension.
OR
C– I have another job or receive a state or
occupational pension.

I don't know but I'd tick A as Carers allowance isn't mentioned.
From your previous years experience of caring was your OH's income taxed? If no, then box A still seems appropriate. If taxed on carers allowance previously then B may be right?
Sorry this isn't the exact answer you wanted.0 -
Many thanks for your reply.
I have just read that carers allowance is a taxable benefit.
If this is right, then i think he ticks box B.
If anyone else thinks different, please can you reply.
Thanks in advance0 -
At least, if he ticks B & gets taxed a bit too much as a result it's not too long to the end of the tax year & he may just get a refund when the tax office come up with the right code.
Why not phone your local tax office tomorrow - they wont discuss OH's tax with you but should be able to give you an idea where he stands for tax?
I presume he starts work tomorrow? He could always put off filling the form in 'til you've spoken to tax office?
Best of Luck0
