Jobseekers Allowance

My partner isn't entitled to Contributions based JSA as his last job was for less than 2 years. Doesn't get Income based JSA either because I work (even though its part time). Does anyone know if he will ever get JSA? Does he maybe have to sign on for a certain length of time or is he basically just gonna get nothing even if he was unemployed for years? I assume he is not eligible for Income support either?

At the moment, if he continues to sign on he gets "credits" that count towards his pension. There may be other benefits, such as 250 pounds if he starts work after signing for a few months, and possible help with interview expenses or work clothes.

He would have to work for a while in order to have any chance of getting contributions-based JSA later.

I already know he has to work for 2 consecutive years to get Contributions Based. What I want to know is if he will ever be entitled to anything if, worst case scenario, he ends up being unemployed for over a year.

Surely if he ends up being on the dole for a year or even 2, he has to get something eventually? He is constantly applying for jobs.

If he continues to claim then he will never become entitled to JSA based on his NI conts, if after a period of work he needs to claim again he may become entitled dependant on the tax years applicable.

I have the same problem, went to sign on but get nothing as not got enough N.I credits, i havent worked solidly for the last two years due to my epilepsy and yet they wont give me disability living allowance as i dont have a walking problem and dont have to be supervised at all times!!

i wont get any other money as my husband works full time, this means we get by, but just!

I am applying for jobs and will continue to sign on for my credits, but it really does suck!

Why does it suck? Your husband is expected to support you if he is working not he state.

  • I don't think that's fair actually. It certainly isn't for me either. I'm expected to support my partner (and baby) on 3 days a week. And before anyone goes on about how I should go back full time, I'm already doing an extra day overtime but my company are about to make redundancies so it certainly aint the time to ask for full time.

We get NOTHING from tax credits as they reckon they overpaid us at the beginning of the financial year.

I certainly don't expect the state to pay for everything but, when we have both worked all our lives (oh sorry apart from 6 months), I think we are entitled to something back once in a while when we need it.

Especially when, a couple of streets away there are 2 scroungers who have never worked and have no intention of working but live in a nice big council house with their 5 kids!

If he worked "all his life" he would have been entitled to contributary jsa. Why did you have a baby when you weren't in a financial position to do so?
  • Erm we had a baby when my partner was working - sorry we can't see into the future that he was going to be made redundant. We aint clairvoyants!!!!! And, if you had bothered to read my posts I said he had a gap in employment of 6 months which is why he isn't get JSA. Don't post unless you have something useful to say.

    OP
It is sad but these are the rules. If your partner has not fulfilled the contribution stipulations then he will not get JSA (cont based). He will not get JSA (income based) if you are earning above a modicum figure. Make sure though that you receive your entitlement to tax credits.

I really can understand your feelings. The present rules make it very difficult
for genuine couples who work and then fall on hard times. Basically either both partnes work or neither works. Or the couple split up to receive more money. It is a sad state of affairs.
