US firm bestbuys starts UK recruiting

Expect this is good new and a shake up for the electonic retailers but can only be bad news for the likes of Currys. They announced it last year but have now started recruiting for stores opening in the summer.

Jobs are on totaljobs but currently only senior ones.

made me laugh!and by comparison many of the Carphone Warehouse stores are a few hundred sq feet

As an American, I can say that this will be great! Best Buy in the US frequently runs really good promos on a HUGE variety of electronic goods. Think of a blend between Currys/Comet with some Carphone Warehouse & PC World thrown in. Everyday prices tend to be standard, but they do run good weekly deals (think of how Costco does) on whatever they're trying to flog. A+!

they are good, but lets hope they dont kill off both comet and DSG - they can kill of dsg as far as im concerned though :rotfl:

It would be nice to see DSGi and Comet become one but that would mean DSGi having to buy Comet and I can't see that happening.

They will struggle to compete with Bestbuy, if Bestbuy go all out on their sales drive from day one however, and get enough stores open in good time, so I fear that with both Comet/KESA and DSGi already struggling (although I do honestly believe DSGi are in a far better position than Comet and are not likely to go bankrupt), Bestbuy could end up killing them off in the years to come.

This would be a bad thing for the consumer, but at present, the more competition the better, however it won't be any good if they follow the supermarket industry and just price match each other, with no real incentive to undercut each other. Unless you get one store located in the same retail centre as the other, they probably won't have much incentive to compete, and even then it may not happen, there is a retail park on Wirral, which has a Comet and then next door to it, a Currys, and neither have really been competitive price wise, just normal prices you see everywhere.

Where i live, there are three major retail parks i can visit. They have Currys, Comet and PC World next to each other, near
each other..it will be the DSG group that will feel the pain from Best Buy :money:

Funny thing is, they opened a Tesco Homeplus a couple of units down from the Currys and Comet a couple of years back, and that is already killing them, it is always packed, whereas they are always empty in comparison.

And yet, they still have little interest in competing on price. And everyone knows the service at Comet and Currys is just as bad as anywhere, jeeze, the trouble I had with Comet a few years back, there was actually in-fighting taking place with one group of staff and another group of staff, regarding my problem. It was all over a £120 SuperVHS video recorder lol. It went on for 3 days before I got anywhere. Even the Service Centre staff got themselves involved in the argument!!
