I became employed in Aug 08 after being self employed from aug 07.
now i didn't know how this job was going to turn out so did not inform the hmrc. The job has been fine but I have been successful in an application for another job - what do I need to do with regards to hmrc?
I have completed a tax return online for 07 - 08. Do i need to complete one for 08-09 now or when the tax year ends? I have not had any self employed work since August therefore my books go from april to aug and as my income was bloody dire Idon;t think I'll be owing much tax but if Ido, when do I pay this?
Iknow I should contact HMRC rigth away but you know the fear.... once you talk to them you'll be under a microscope!!
many thanks in advance.

If you are employed is your employer paying your taxes via PAYE?

I'm in the same boat; I ended self employment in May 08 to go back to work but wanted to keep my self employment registered in case the job didn't work out. In fact I only called up to let them know I'd finished self employment yesterday!!!
All you need to do is call 0845 9154655 to tell them you're no longer working as self employed. Have your National Insurance number handy! (And some patience; it took a while to get through...) They'll send you a form to fill in and return.
As for tax just do your next return as normal; you'll be emailed a reminder rather than a paper copy as you did your last one on line. In the return there's a box to enter your last date of self employment. You can pay the tax as soon as your return is done or by the normal January deadline. You can pay tax on your self employed earnings through PAYE if you want but if it's not much you might as well pay it off in one go.
Hope this helps; I know what you mean about not wanting to draw attention to yourself but you've got nothing to worry about0 -
