Paid off advice!

I'm new so hope this is the right place to post, however i have lurked on these boards for months now!
I have been signed off work for 4 weeks now due to severe stress at home with my children..loooong story and recieving ssp:(
Can't see me going back for a while yet but can the company just pay me off?
I ve only been there 4 mths and am thinking of handing my notice in before they pay me off as I don't know what the consequences would be as in looking for a new job, ie explaining about why I was paid off and worried about the reference they could give...
Have not had a day sick in 7 yrs and was quite proud of that. I have looked into the benefits I would recieve should I do this..scary tho but am prepared to do this until I get my personal life sorted out..just so scared off being paid off or even sacked:cry: as have never been in this position before.
Can anyone advise me please?

  • Anyone????

Really need help on this one :(
  • I'd think getting paid off would be the best option. Leaving could affect benefits as could being sacked.
If you could ensure good references from your previous employer, I'd lose the 4 months. Failing that, somewhere thats not there any more. ( I worked at Woolworths but dont have contact details for my supervisor/manager).
  • Thanks Scotsman...my previous employer would provide good references..but would future employers not want to know where that 4 mths went to?
Had a good work history up till this point, don't want to ruin it while I sort my problem out..
  • Does anyone else have any ideas/suggestions re my situation:confused:

    Thanks in advance..

What do you mean by "paid off"? Do you mean getting the sack due to sickness absence?

Any new employer would want a reference off the old employer, plus they usually ask your old employer to about sickness record. If you have had a lot of time off sick, its hard to hide it!

It's unlikely that they'll pay you off to get rid of you, as you haven't been there long enough to claim unfair dismissal if they sack you for being off sick. it's more likely that they will just dismiss you for not fulfilling your contract, or under some kind of capability policy. sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the truth is that until you've been employed a year your rights are limited.

You might well be better resigning on the grounds of ill health if you feel that you would be better off not returning to work. It is easier to explain to a potential next employer and shows a sense of responsibility. The choice depends on your personal circumstances though.
  • I suggest that you look at the following website:

    www.adviceguide.org.uk under employment

Or visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau. On no account should you hand in your notice - the JobCentre will probably
sanction you for 26 weeks before they will give you Jobseekers Allowance

  • Thank you everyone for your advice.
I just didn't want to explain to a future employer that I was sacked or paid off, and thought handing my notice in would be a easier situ to explain. After much such soul searching, I have handed my notice in. Then cried for an hour afterwards!!!!!
I will need theses boards even more now...thank you again everyone.
