Reclaiming Tax - whats the best way to do it, please help a poor graduate !!

Hello Everyone,
Just looked at my past payslips by chance and noticed that i have ended up paying too much tax, as my tax code was an emergency code.
I had a part time job in 2005, earning £7000 per year, my tax code was something like 489L. But in July 2005, i started a full time job, £14000 a year, but also carried on doing the part time job. I noticed that in July 2005, my tax code for the part time job changed to BR (which i guess is the emergency code) and the tax code for the full time job became 489L.
I then left the full time job in July 2006 to return back to full time education. I spent a year in university and carried on doing my part time job, but my tax code was still BR. I graduated in Sep 2007 and started a full time job in a big company in October 2007 (still working for them) and left my part time job.
So basically, the tax code for my only part time job from July 2006 - October 2007 was BR.
Have i paid too much tax during that time ? And what is the best way to claim it back ?
Shall i write to tax office, if so which one and what documents would i need to include ?
Or can i claim it back through my current employer through PAYE ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you need to write to your present tax office and ask for a refund. Give full details of all your employers, etc for the year, so they get a full picture. Code BR is basic rate, not emergency code.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0
