Limited Company - Flight Expenses claim eligibility

I am a doctor living in DUblin and work through my Limited company in UK. I do contract work which is Monday to Friday only with extensions of the contract on a 2 weekly basis as needed in England Hospitals. I go back to Dublin on Friday night from Manchester by flight and return on Sunday.

1) Does my Flight charges back to Dublin where my home/Base and the car mileage to Manchester airport and to place of work can be claimed as expenses incurred in the context of Limited company expenses?

2) I brought my car by Ferry from Dublin via Hollyhead as my work entails travelling to other hospitals around the base hospital. Does the Ferry cost be claimed as expenses incurred as related to my work?

I thank the tax savvy board members for their advice and suggestions.

  • You cannot offset tax for commuting to and from a place of work. You can only claim travel from your place of work to another place of work - eg from your normal office to a client. Given that your company is a UK registered company, I don't think the revenue would accept that your Irish home was your place of work, given you spend the entire working week in the UK.

Same goes for the car question I think. If you flew here and hired a car that may be different.

Speak to an accountant as it sounds like your business model is quite complex!

I agree, you have a dual resident company plus personal tax issues, IR35 issues, 2 countries VAT returns etc etc to handle. You need professional help.

It should be noted that this is the first post & the same question has been asked on multiple forums; eg: http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=750441
  • HopefulfoolUK and Cook_County thank you very much for your advice. Much appreciated.

I did not get proper advice initially from an accounting agency I had used online - EACBS. Sorting that out now.

Second Post on UK Businessforums as some boards are not active or replying to any questions. Cook_County nothing personal.

I have looked at the EACBS website. They do not state they have any accounting or tax qualifications so they may have none.

You need detailed international advice on mutiple issues.
