re-mortgage with poor credit

We need to downsize financially and have sold our property but cant get a good re mortgage rate because I have had credit history - we intend to clear all our debts with our equity any ideas which banks might give us a mortgage. My husband works ful time but I have had to take ill health retirement. best rate so far is 5.81% variable ????
