Hi all,
Have cancelled our wedding due to us splitting up (it's a good thing though and I'm ok) but I ordered my dress last month and veil and paid around £400 for 50%. Tried to cancel but the shop say I have 2 options- pay the other half of the dress and keep it (could try to sell it on) or lose the deposit.
It's a beautiful Charlotte Balbier dress.
Would appreciate some idea's or views please !!
Thanks

You might be best to lose the deposit. You could check how much similar dresses are going for second hand but you are taking more of a risk by shelling out the full amount - would you get more than half back by selling it on?
Perhaps speak to the shop again - ask if it has started to be made yet - see if you can haggle on getting a small amount of the deposit back. However, you may just have to accept that £400 is a small price to pay in comparison to being married to the wrong person. *hug*0 -
Could you post details on here to see if a money saving bride could have the dress made for her at 'bargain' price whilst you get at least the majority of the money back?
Sorry, I got hitched in December otherwise I'd have had a look.0 -
hi, i think roxalana & ebeneezer are right. i've seen people struggle to sell unworn dresses on confetti as some brides to be see this as bad luck. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090

I would speak to the shop again - perhaps if the dress hasn't been started (unlikely if you weren't getting married for a while yet) then perhaps they would agree to refund half your deposit (every little helps).
It's unlikely you'll be able to resell very easily, unless you found someone to buy it in advance of paying for it in full.......
sorry to hear about the wedding - glad you are ok xr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
thanks all for replies. I ordered the dress about a month ago, and according to the shop- I signed all of the T's and C's which meant non refundable whether or not they have started making the dress or not !
Obviously the shop has an agreement with the designer too, there is no way I can get my money back. Have tried everything.
I paid £480 or so up front (50%) and have another £400 to pay, think I'm going to take the hit as how would it seem to have a brand new wedding dress in my wardrobe with no wedding !!
thanks for concern- I AM ok- he didn't do anything wrong and nor did I, we just realised we were wrong together (for it to be forever) and I'm glad we've both realised it now without making a huge mistake.

You could pop in and try a face to face approach. I know a lot of shops don't actually order the dresses when you go in to pay deposit, they wait at least another 10 weeks+. Could you find the contact details of the designer and find out if the order has actually been placed, they should have your name etc. Then if they haven't ordered it yet I don't see why they can't give you the deposit back.0

ha ha- I thought of that !! but can you imagine meeting someone, he looks in my wardrobe one day and sees a wedding dress??
or if one of my friends lets it slip that I've got a brand new wedding dress....
he'd be long gone !! I seem to have gone off getting married at the moment, funny that.....MTC's NO MORE PIES MEMBER NO 202 !!!

Nah. If they haven't made the dress, I'd argue with them some more. If they've already bought the fabric, then you can buy that, with a hefty markup for them, perhaps.
I'd agree though that maybe you should post the model/size of the dress. There are a lot of us here still hunting for that perfect gown.Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. - Jonathan Kozol0 -
OK- well it was and still is my perfect dress.
Its a Charlotte Balbier dress (she is Amanda Wyatt's daughter and a new designer) http://www.charlottebalbier.com/ go to Summer of Love page 3 the dress is called Morgan.
I have it ordered in a size 10.
