First three if 8 runners or more
First two if 4 runners or more
Win only if three runners or less.

Its winner only if less than 5 runners. It is also important to see if it is a handicap or not. If it isnt a handicap you can have 20+ runners and still only 3 places.
Watch out also for non-runners, especially during the bad weather. I chose a 7-horse race a few weeks ago and it ended up as a 3 horse race. I tend to only place an each-way bet where there are lots of horses running.Don't wait for the storm to pass

I found this on the Racecaller forum on 21st Jan which explains the new rules although it's still a bit confusing to me
The rules for the Racecaller Monthly and Annual League have changed. From tomorrow members will be able to place more than 1 bet each day as well as place each way bets on the site.
More than one bet per day:
Members can still only bet 20 credits each day. With 5 credits being the smallest amount they can stake, this allows them to place up to 4 tips per day.
They can stake 1 X 20pt, 2 X 10pt bets, 1 X 10pt & 2 X 5pt bets or 4 X 5pt bets,
Members can still choose to select just one tip per day if they so wish and there is no need to stake the full 20 points on any single day but members can only place 1 bet on a horse i.e. once you placed a 5 or 10pt bet on a horse you cannot place another bet on the same horse.
Each way bets:
Members can now place each way bets on the site. Rules for each way are simple.
A 5pt each way bet costs 10 pts and gives you a 5pt win and a 5pt place bet on the horse.
A horse is considered to be placed if it finishes:
In the first 2 in a 5 to 7 runner race,
In the first 3 in an 8+ runner race or
In the first 4 in a 16+ runner handicap.
Each way bets placed in races with 4 or less runners are considered to be straight win bets i.e. 5pts each way in a 4 horse race equates to a 10 point win bet.
All each ways bets will be settled at 1/4 odds for a place with the exception of non-handicaps with 8 or more runners (which will be settled at 1/5 odds).

I had a 10 point e/w bet on a horse in a racecard of 8 horses which finished 3rd so I thought I would get some ponts for a place ,then I discovered there had been a non-runner so it was only a 7 horse race which meant my bet was a loser. I don't expect to get any racecaller points any more but I'll keep having a go for the "fun" of it!!!0
