Self Assesment advice....please!

Hello All,
My girlfriend has just completed her first self assesment tax form for 2007/08. She only managed to earn a fairly small amount in this year, just over £7k. She managed to claim about £300 expenses (office use in flat, heat, gas etc)

She filled out the online tax form and it worked out her tax and NI at about £400 for this year. Which obviously we were happy about!

However, when she went to pay the amount via the website, it says 'amount to pay - £0.00' - is this because they haven't processed the form yet?

Finally, does she need to pay 50% for next year yet? There was nothing on the form to state this? I wondered if it was a no considering this was her first time.

Any advice appreciated.
D

    1) What does she do for a living - expenses seem quite low but maybe there is a good explanation.

    2) As amount outstanding is below £500, there is no requirement to make payments on account for 2008/09. Remember though, if her bill is £600 when files her return for that year she will have to pay the whole £600 plus a payment on account for 2009/10 of £300 at the same time.
  • yes, the site tends to refresh after 24 hours so check again then.
if the liability for 07/08 is under £500, they don't ask for payments on account for 08/09 so that's why. however, keep this in mind, if you have a great year in 08/09 you haven't paid towards it in advance - it sometimes hits people the following january when there is a hefty sum to pay.
