Self Certification

My wife recently took sick leave from 8th January to 16th January, returning to work on 19th January.
On her return she was expecting to self certificate herself for a period of 7 days which would cover her sick leave period. She was told by the local GP that saturdays and sundays are only included in that 7 days if a person usually works those days, which my wife doesn't.
Her employer, on the other hand, has asked her to provide a sick certificate from the GP to cover the 15th and 16th January!
Can anyone advise where I might find the definitive ruling on this subject please?

Not exactly what you're looking for, but it does say that the 7 days include weekends and bank holidays

Where I work if you ring in on the friday to say you are well enough to return to work and then have 2 days off that is ok because you in theory returned to work within the 7 days.

actually looking at your dates she was off for more than 7 consequative days so yes you do need a sick note. Weekends are included if you are off sick before and after the weekend ie wed thurs fri sat sun mon tues wed thurs is 9 days off and a note is needed HTH
