do I need to submit a Self Assessment?

I have been a director of a small family company since 1999 and on this basis I completed SA, however, in 2008 I got a letter from my tax office saying that I no longer needed to complete SA. It was an unpaid office and I had little other income.

My income has gone up slightly but still well within my Personal Allowance. I am not on PAYE or self employed.

Do I need to complete a SA? Just wondered if the tax office regularly write to people to say, thanks but no SA required.

I am a little confused as on reading the HMRC website, it says company directors do need to file a SA

  • Normally company directors do have to fill in Self Assessment tax returns, but in your circumstances you are ok. Hang on to that letter from HMRC though, just in case. HMRC only send such letters out they are sure you don't need a tax return. They don't like missing out on any possible income!!
